Favorite YouTube Videos Part I

by Dave Loft

The title pretty much sums it up, great soundtrack on this clip.

Two words best describe this video, chicks and shakes.

The only thing more epic than this fight is the score playing in the background which fits so well it must have been edited to go along with the action. The soundtrack definitely is take from the movie Predator. Make sure you watch this video to the end.

This trailer is for a fictitious movie called Jerry the Great, it’s brilliantly done and really makes me want to start watching the show again. This yet another example of a video that is made great with an awesome score taken from the Inception trailer.

Heather is a hot and talented girl and her show is definitely worth checking out.

Any fan of TF2 on PC will laugh and cry when they see this video. No one can grief better than two engineers from apposing teams working together.

Doggy found a new chew toy.

Somehow this video is cute and a little creepy all at the same time. I also can’t help but be reminded of the aliens from Toy Story.

This clip was funny to begin with then someone made it into a killer dance mix, this is guaranteed to make you laugh.

When I have kids I will definitely employ this excellent wake up technique.

Favorite Android Apps Part III

by Dave Loft

AdFree
(BigTinCan.com)
If you love your apps but hate the ads you can use AdFree to remove the ad. Unfortunately with some apps it leaves a gaping hole on the screen. But at least you won’t have any accidental click through. This app is for Angry Birds fans who are angry that an ad free version is not available. Also remember, this app is for root users only.

android2cloud
(Paddy Foran)
android2cloud is the opposite of Chrome2Phone from my previous list. android2cloud lets you push anything that can be shared to your computer. I use it often if I find a YouTube video I want to watch. With this app I can push the link into my browser and watch the video on a bigger screen.

Androidify
(Google)
This is for anyone who enjoys customizing their Mii on their Nintendo Wii. Or their avatar on Xbox Live. You start with a the standard green Android and you can customize everything from colour, to hair, to clothing and accessories. Once created you can easily share your Android character just about anywhere. This app almost belongs under games.

App 2 SD
(Sam Lu)
Are you running out of application storage? Do you hate having to check each and every app if it supports moving to the sd card? Do you want an app that automatically does this for you and can notify you when an app can be moved. The functionality of this app should be built into Android, but since it isn’t this app is crucial to anyone who has memory management issues.
Android Market Link

cloudList (quarterStaf)
This app is my favorite list making app that allows me to easily share lists with friends and family. If there is anything we need we just add it to our list and its pushed to anyone were sharing it with. I use this app with my wife for grocery shopping. The app goes beyond a simple list by allowing you to specify the number of units and the category the item should be listed under.
Android Market Link

Comics (Comixology)
This is the best app for comic book fans. No other app allows you to view a full size comic so effortlessly on the small display of a phone. It offers a huge selection of comics from just about every publisher. Currently Marvel is missing, but it is reported to be coming soon. Every week well over a hundred comics are made available for purchase. There are also plenty of free comics to choose from. I can’t wait to try this app out on a tablet.

CNET TV (CBS Interactive)
Any tech fans out there will be familiar with CNET TV. With multiple new episodes added everyday from a colourful cast of characters which help make this an informative and entertaining app to use. The app goes beyond the competitors by also allowing you to watch podcasts live, something the TWiT app does not allow. If you want to stay up to date with anything tech and prefer to watch then read, this app is for you.

IMDb (IMDb)
I use this app all the time. If I want to know what that actors name is, or if I want to know what other movies that actress is in. The app is very well designed and when movies, TV or celebrities it shows a list in order of popularity. The app was recently revamped and have added a news and showtimes section making this the movie and television app available. The only thing it lacks is the social aspect Flixster’s Movies offers allowing users to rate movies they have seen and list movies they want to see.

Photoshop (Adobe)
While the camera on a smartphone is not the best camera, it’s most likely the only camera you have with you all the time. Because of this, I tend to use it much more than my SLR. The one thing that does make a phone a better camera is the ability to edit and then upload your photos on the go without needing to transfer the files to a computer first. My Galaxy S takes good photos but combined with photoshop I can now have great photos. With each generation of phone the camera gets better and the closer the point and shoot cameras get to becoming obsolete. Photoshop should be in any photographer on the go’s phone.

VEVO (VEVO)
This is the best place to go to watch music videos. While YouTube is also a great place to go for music videos the focus and attention to detail that VEVO pays to music makes it a standout app. The app is smooth, in design and motion. There is no stutter  when scrolling through lists and images don’t pop up, they fade in. When loading a video, you are greeted with facts about the artists and options for more info, share and buy. The only downside is the occasional commercial, but it’s a small price to pay for a great collection of music videos.

Favorite Android Games of 2010

by Dave Loft

16. Drop 7 (Area/Code Games)
Drop7 is a very unique game that’s fairly hard to describe. The best way I can try to explain it is to say it’s like Sudoku meats Tetris.  Each turn you get to drop a circle with a number ranging from 1 – 7. Your goal is to remove as many of these circles as you can by making a row or column with the same number of circles as the number on the circle. Once mastered you will have a hard time putting it down.

15. Fruit Ninja (Halfbrick)
Fruit Ninja is one of the best selling games on Android and iOS games. It has style, buttery smooth animation and simple entertaining game-play that anyone can get into. To make things more fun your best scores will be compared with your friends using the Open Feint social gaming network. This will keep you coming back long after the clones fade away. At $0.99 this game is hard to not slice into.

14. EVAC HD (Hexage)
EVAC at it’s surface may look like a simple game of Pac-Man but instead requires a serious amount of strategy to master. It takes the simple pellet eating game-play and gives you the ability to hide, trap and block your enemies. The games difficulty serious ramps up in the later levels and will require quite a few attempts to master the given level.

13. Wordfeud (hbwares)
Wordfeud is the best scrabble game on Android and it’s available for free. What makes this game great is the ability to play with friends. But unlike most multi-player games you don’t have to play at the same time. After each turn a notification is sent and the player has three days to play. Some games can take hours and some can last weeks. This set your pace game-play is perfect for the smartphone.

12. Flight Director (Camel Games)
There are plenty of games available with this exact game-play but I think  Flight Director got the formula just right. While the satellite shots of air bases are somewhat cheesy to use as your backdrop. It’s far superior than the cartoon graphics from the competition. This game provides a very fun, intuitive and challenging game-play that will keep you coming back to improve your high score.

11. Flick Kick Football (PikPok)
Flick Kick Football is by design the simplest game on Android. You simple flick your finger over the ball towards the net to score a goal.  The precision of the controls is what makes the game brilliant and lacks other games frustration. The comic book style graphics are simple yet beautifully designed. The brilliance in Flick Kick Football is it’s devilishly addicting game-play.

10. Asphalt 5 HD (Gameloft)
Asphalt 5 is the closest thing Android currently has to Hot Pursuit. Collecting and using nitrous is the name of the game mastering that and using the shortcuts is the key to winning. The game goes beyond most arcade racers by offering various car performance enhancements. This game will keep you coming back for just one more car unlock. Needless to say this game is addictive and fun.

9. Everlands HD (Hexage)
Everlands cute visuals hide a very deep and satisfying turn based strategy game. The game starts simple but ramps up the difficulty in later levels. The fit and finish of the games user interface is only equaled by Rovio’s Angry Birds. This game begs for multi-player and the lack of it has kept me from rating the game higher. But even without it, it’s still the best strategy game available.

8. Real Football (Soccer) 2011 HD (Gameloft)
Unlike Flick Kick Football, Real Football is a full fledge console quality game for Android. Every aspect of the game has been improved over the 2010 version from visuals to game-play. The controls couldn’t be simpler, with three action buttons for shoot, pass and run and an analog stick for movement. This has to be on any football fans must have list.

7. Modern Combat: Sandstorm HD (Gameloft)
Modern Combat is a great fps that provides Android gamers a Call of Duty like experience. Not surprisingly Modern Combat offers the best multi-player fps combat available. The game excels in many areas with sharp graphics, smooth animation, quality audio and intense gun play. The game provides a challenge and an arsenal of weapons to accomplish them.

6. Homerun Battle 3D (Com2uS)
Homerun Battle 3D is at it’s surface a simple game, but truthfully it’s just a streamlined experience tailor made for mobile devices. What really makes it a great game is the fantastic control, beautiful visuals and competitive online play. Another key to it’s success is the level of character customization. This is simply the best baseball game on Android.

5. Need For Speed Shift (EA Mobile)
Need for Speed Shift is hands down the best looking racing game on Android. Combine the tightest controls of any racer, deep game-play, the best sound production and you have a near perfect racer. The only thing keeping this game from a higher spot on the list is lack of multi-player. Yet even without it, EA has crafted the best simulation racing game available.

4. N.O.V.A. HD (Gameloft)
This ain’t no rail shooter, it’s the real deal and it provides some of the best visuals of any game on Android. The games pulls many influences from Halo so fans of the series will want to check it out. Controls are intuitive and the combat is intense. A great soundtrack, superb visual effects and challenging multi-player truly makes this the best FPS on Android.
